Current expansion plans are for additional museum space and multiple levels of below-grade parking to be added toward the east and south of the existing 1904 World’s Fair, Cass Gilbert Building.  The design for the major expansion is being directed by Mr. David Chipperfield, renowned architect of public space, based in London; structural engineering is being provided by Magnuson Klemencic Associates, Seattle.  Gateway’s lead role, working with SCI Engineering, Inc., consisted of directing two phases of geotechnical exploration, totaling nearly 1,300 feet of soil drilling and rock coring; integrating the obtained data with earlier explorations; primary laboratory testing; engineering analysis and design recommendations; and reporting.  Challenging issues were led by those associated with the planned deep excavation and foundation walls, including the varied character of the foundation materials, lateral earth pressures, and groundwater control; stability of excavation slopes; and the shoring system required to maintain the excavation while protecting the integrity of the adjacent buildings.
